Infos & BookingDescription
I propose you to come and explore the superb Roche Veyrand via ferrata, located above the village of Saint-Pierre-d'Entremont in the Chartreuse massif.
This via ferrata is made up of two distinct sections that climb to Roche Veyrand at an altitude of 1429 meters. The first, rather easy and reached after a walk in the forest, is a sequence of ladders and traverses, including a beautiful Himalayan footbridge, on pretty limestone and with a rather reasonable gradient. It's perfect for beginners and great fun for everyone, as the environment is sublime and the view of the high Chartreuse peaks incredible.
After passing over the trees, we reach a first slab and then the "Pont du Dolmen". This is followed by several other slabs on which you can use many natural rock holds. A pretty dihedral then several passages on a path and slabs lead to the 17-meter "pas loquace" footbridge, then to the end of this first section.
From here, you can return down the difficult Clapiers path, reach the summit in around 30 minutes on a very steep path, or continue on to the second part of the via ferrata.
The second part is designed more for sporty types. After the warm-up of the first part, this section features a long footbridge, more overhanging walls and some great traverses! The last one is the most impressive, 200 meters above the ground!
The second half of the route is designed for more athletic riders. Indeed, after the warm-up of the first part, this section features a long footbridge, more overhanging walls and some great traverses! The last section is the most impressive, 200 meters above the ground! We start by skirting a small boulder to reach the 30-meter long "Pas de la frousse" footbridge, which is slightly uphill. A first pillar then leads to a ledge containing several caves, which are very appreciated for their coolness in midsummer. A second pillar almost at the beginning of the ledge is skirted, giving you a vertiginous atmosphere (you are roughly in the middle of the cliff). We continue along the ledge, passing the "pont des balmes", to reach a vertical section and, halfway up, an overhang that's not too difficult to climb. The route continues gently up a ledge to reach a chimney a few meters high. Finally, after a traverse under a roof, we attack the last overhang before ending this via with a small, easy slab.
A quarter-hour's walk will take you to the summit of Roche Veyrand, where you will have a breathtaking view over a large part of the Chartreuse massif.
The two sections can be linked, but you will need to allow for a full day.
For other vertical adventures, you can also follow me on:
- the Bastille urban via ferrata in Grenoble,
- the nearby Crolles via ferrata: La vire des lavandières and Le grand dièdre,
- the Sautet lake via ferrata,
- the Cascade via ferrata in the Taillefer massif,
- the P'tchi via ferrata in the Bauges mountains
- or its neighbor, the Grotte à Carret.
Maybe you'll even want to go one step further and take an introductory climbing course around Grenoble.
