Description

Planning a multi-day trek or hike? Wondering if you're ready? I've created this 3-day training course in the Pyrenees to help you prepare and organize an autonomous trek.

To ensure that these moments are magical, it's best to anticipate any problems as far as possible, so as to avoid them or manage them in the best possible way.

After all, the mountains are not a risk-free environment. With the possibility of storms, fog, lack of a network, technical terrain and the physical effort of walking and portaging, it's a good idea to have a little experience before embarking in complete safety.

Training objectives: information on the mountains, risks, effort management, plants, water, what to do in the event of an accident, nutrition, rationing, information on backpacking equipment for an autonomous trek.
Prior to the trip, we will hold a telephone or video conference to prepare your equipment.

If you'd like to continue your training in autonomy, I also offer an introduction to bivouac in the Pyrenees.
You can also come with me on trips like the Posets ascent, the Añisclo canyon tour in the Spanish Pyrenees or a trek in the Néouvielle reserve.

Program

D1: Fundamentals, practical aspects, safety.
Meet in Arreau, an hour's drive from Tarbes or Saint-Gaudens.

  • Morning: Basics.
    • How to pack for an autonomous raid. What do you take with you? What type of equipment to take?
    • Preparing backpacks for 2-day hikes: equipment, type of food, back pack (compass, map, repair and first-aid kits, etc.), technical clothing.
    • Know where to place your equipment and how to organize your backpack (important!).
    • Weather study.
    • Rescue: who? how? The different steps to follow.
    • Study of cartography (compass + map handling and phone application), study of a 2-day raid itinerary (identifying hazards, setting up Plan Bs, etc.).
  • Afternoon: Hands-on practice, hiking and orienteering.
    • First half-day to get used to the weight of the backpack.
    • Orientation exercises on and off trails, triangulation, UTM coordinates, etc.
    • Meals at accommodation.

D2: Day of mountain hiking.

  • Hike mixing all types of terrain: easy, uphill, downhill, technical (varied route, grassy slope, pebbles, etc.) to awaken your mountain feet.
  • Work on walk and pace to manage effort.
  • How to adjust your backpack.
  • When and how to eat and hydrate throughout the day.
  • Bivouac: where and how to set up camp, bivouac regulations (if located in a national park or nature reserve).
  • Meal preparation.

D3: Return to the valley.

  • Packing up camp and mountain breakfast.
  • Hike back to the valley.
  • We'll also take the opportunity to summarize everything we've seen.
