Description

Located in the Hérault department, some fifty kilometers north of Béziers, the Caroux massif is a listed site offering a multitude of multi pitch routes with varying degrees of equipment in a truly mountain environment. In the heart of the Haut Languedoc regional conservation area, it rises to an altitude of almost 1100 meters and dominates the Orb valley to the south. Known for the Héric gorges that cut right through it, its secluded hamlets from another era, its mineral wealth and its mouflons, the Caroux massif is one of the main granite climbing sites in the south of France.

The excellent granite on which the routes are set is particularly well-suited to traditional climbing, which requires you to place your own protection in order to climb safely.

During this 2-day course, I will gradually teach you the keys to progressing in adventure terrain. I will teach you all the secrets of this type of climbing on routes adapted to your level.

Here are a few examples of the routes we could climb together during the course:

  • Tête de Braque north-east ridge: Located at the start of the magnificent Héric gorges, this great level 4 route is perfect for familiarizing yourself with the local style of climbing. 6 short pitches take you to the summit, from which you descend on two abseils.
  • Roc de Peyris south ridge: A little harder than the previous route (5b maximum), this route rises on a ridge that becomes increasingly steep all the way to the summit. The descent is done on more or less steep paths.
  • Charbonniers ridge: On the left bank of the Héric gorges, this ridge offers a 4+ maximum climbing, 250 meters high for 8 pitches. It is a very pretty ridge, ideal for an introduction to traditional climbing, and its rock is perfect for using friends, cams and slings.
  • Aiguille Deplasse south-west ridge: Here you climb the most beautiful peak in the Caroux massif! With its quality rock and vertiginous atmosphere, this 4-max route with a vertical drop of 150 meters is a classic.
  • Aiguille Godefroy south-west ridge: This level 4 route is one of the longest in the Caroux. It is an easy climb, ideal for discovering the mountain atmosphere and practising the usage of cams.
  • Minaret south-east ridge: Adventure terrain and route-finding are the order of the day on this 300-meter route, which is not very strenuous but very pretty, 5b max. The key pitch is a 30-meter slab, now fully bolted.

If you want to continue the adventure, I also offer a day of multi pitch climbing in the Pyrenees,  a multi pitch climbing course in the Calanques, and, for an incredible experience, sleep on a cliff in the Pyrenees or Occitanie.
