Description
Discover the Piton de la Fournaise volcano at walking pace!
You will experience a fantastic, gradual ascent from the green pastures to the mineral summit, through successive calderas marking the history of one of the most active volcanoes on the planet. You will enjoy some of the finest panoramas of the Fournaise massif that you will never forget!
If I am unavailable, a colleague from the Bureau Montagne Réunion Trek will take care of the supervision.
You can include this ascent in a 5-day trek to discover the 3 cirques and 2 volcanoes of Reunion Island, or in the famous Reunion Diagonal trekking. And to complete your stay on the island's high peaks, I recommend the ascent of the Piton des Neiges, the highest peak in the Indian Ocean, as well as the 6-day tour and ascent of the Piton des Neiges.
Program
D1: Bourg-Murat - Volcano lodge.
We begin our ascent towards the Piton de la Fournaise massif from Bourg-Murat and its pastures. The steady climb of the GRR2 trail takes us through heather moorland, over panoramic views of the nez de Boeuf, the rivière des remparts and the Commerson crater to the Sainte-Thérèse oratory. From here, the view takes in the peaks of Piton des Neiges and Piton de la Fournaise, before plunging into the incredible Plaine des Sables. We cross this unique area to end our day at the brand-new, comfortable volcano lodge at the foot of the summit cone.
Duration: 7 hours, distance: 18km, positive altitude difference: 900 meters, negative altitude difference: 250 meters.
D2: Volcano lodge - Piton de la Fournaise - Bourg-Murat.
In the morning, after a few minutes' walk, we discover the caldera of the Fouqué enclosure, with the summit cone enthroned in the middle. We descend into the enclosure via the Bellecombe-Jacob pass, then climb up to the Dolomieu crater via one of its many routes. Only professional guides can take you off-trail into the enclosure, away from the crowds. This is your chance to discover the Bory crater, La Soufrière and other hidden wonders of the volcano!
Return to the Pas de Bellecombe parking lot, then take the transporter down to Bourg-Murat.
