Via ferrata & mountaineering on Mont Charvin (Aravis)
Duration : 1 day
France, Northern Alps
Level : sporty
from 140 € / p. from 1 to 3 persons
Infos & BookingDescription
At an altitude of 2409 meters, Mont Charvin is without doubt the most beautiful peak in the Aravis massif!
Located on the border between Savoie and Haute-Savoie, its summit offers an exceptional panorama of the entire northern Alps.
And what better way to reach the summit via a route similar to via ferrata, mixing the usual techniques of via ferrata (progressing along a cable, self-assured with lanyards) with those of easy mountaineering? The result is a memorable and unique day, which also makes the climb more enjoyable: time stretches out, the hours fly by without seeing them go by, all the attention being on managing the manipulations and the way of progressing in mountain terrain.
The ascent is via the Golet de la Trouye route, and the descent via the Pas de l'Ours.
This adventure is a great way to discover or practice via ferrata, but also to spend a day in the mountains, away from the crowds, with a real summit at the end!
Please note: These itineraries are only available from June 15 to October 15 (according to municipal by-laws), but this may vary according to snow conditions.
If you want to discover other via ferrata nearby, I also suggest:
- the Thônes via ferrata,
- the Yves Pollet-Villard via ferrata at Col des Aravis,
- and the Tour du Jalouvre via ferrata at Col de la Colombière.
And maybe this outing will inspire you to follow me on this complete traverse of the Tournette massif, or for some eco-responsible mountaineering in Haute-Savoie.
Program
- Meet at the Auberge du Col de l'Arpettaz.
- A short meeting to introduce the day and our equipment.
- We set off along a path that takes us to the beginning of the serious stuff. The first part is a non-continuous cable route, before arriving at the Golet de la Trouye, a welcome break. The next part consists of ascending the south-east ridge of Mont Charvin, via successive passages of steep but small walls, sometimes equipped with cables. This 2nd section is impressive, overlooking the vertical cliffs on the Ugine side!
- When we reach the summit, we are overjoyed to have made it this far!
A good break allows us to regain our strength before setting off on the descent. - The descent is via the north-east ridge, cabled on its upper section. It requires just as much attention to reach the Pas de l'Ours, a "secret" passage giving access to the eastern slope and the road to the Col de l'Arpettaz.
The Pas de l'Ours passage is cable-secured, but once again requires careful attention, before leading to the footpath and then the trail back to the starting point. - Altitude gain: 900 meters.
Walking time in excess of 6 hours.
