Cinéastes and Pic du Glacier Blanc ridges (Écrins)

Description

I propose you to go on two magnificent mountaineering trips of fairly difficult level on rocky ridges overlooking the Glacier Blanc in the Écrins massif. Peace of mind is guaranteed on these famous routes!

The climbing level is IV/IV+, it is adapted for a person who is at ease in "all terrain". A good physical condition is recommended to make the most of the two days.

These climbs are an opportunity to enjoy excellent quality rock and a magnificent high mountain atmosphere with exceptional views of the highest peaks of the massif such as Mont Pelvoux, the Dôme and the Barre des Écrins, etc.

The Cinéastes crossing is a very beautiful ridge run, featuring varied climbing on fine granite that is generally good to very good. It usually climbs the first 6 of the 9 peaks that make up the ridge, via the highest point at 3203 meters. A passage on the east face reserves the most technical climbing pitches (4+), and the route on the ridge that follows includes passages on absolutely superb rock. The view of the Glacier Blanc basin and the north faces of Pelvoux, Pic sans Nom and Ailefroides is sumptuous. The descent is made via several abseils.

The Pic du Glacier Blanc is a typical high-mountain ridge route for level 4 climbers, interspersed with two vertiginous but short abseils and with a lot of rope handling and rope up changes. The panorama is sublime above the Glacier Blanc, facing the Barre des Écrins, the highest peak in the massif at 4102 meters. The descent is easy, on foot, to the refuge and then to the parking lot.

And if you would like to try other mountaineering routes in this part of the Écrins massif, I suggest you follow me on the famous Pelvoux traverse. We can also go further and higher together to climb Gran Paradiso in Italy or Mont Blanc in Haute-Savoie.

Program

D1: Climb of the Arête des Cinéastes.
We meet at the Pré de Madame Carle, 40 minutes drive from Briançon and 1 hour and a half from Gap.
Departure at 7am for the Glacier Blanc hut, where we can leave any gear not needed for the rest of the day.
An hour to an hour-and-a-half approach hike to reach the start of the technical section, then around 3 hours of climbing to reach the Pointe des Cinéastes via the very attractive ridge of the same name.
Descent to the Glacier Blanc refuge.
Positive altitude difference: 1300 meters.

D2: Climb of the Pic du Glacier Blanc.
Departure at 6am from the refuge to reach the Southern ridge of the Pic du Glacier Blanc after a walk on glacier.
Climb of the ridge and return to Pré de Madame Carle during the day.
Positive altitude difference: 1000 meters.
