Infos & BookingDescription
Peñas is a wonderful little village in the Bolivian Altiplano, located about one hour and a half drive from the capital La Paz and close to the famous Lake Titicaca. Among other things, it offers a magnificent view of the glaciers of the nearby Cordillera Real de los Andes .
For the past ten years, it has been possible to climb on the many red sandstone cliffs scattered around the area. Thanks to its special geographical position, Peñas is also a mystical place for the Chiripa and Aymara cultures, which left numerous archaeological remains in the surrounding hills (which are still 4300 meters high...).
In addition to hiking and climbing, meals and accommodation with local people, as well as a visit to a local handicraft workshop complete this unforgettable experience, which is as much sporting and adventurous as it is human one.
If you want to continue your discovery of the climbing spots of Bolivia, I propose other stays which should interest you:
Program
D1: Archaeological hiking.
Today we go for a 4-hour walk with a 300-meter positive difference in altitude around the village of Peñas. This hike is an opportunity to visit the rock paintings of the Chiripa culture and some colonial ruins.
On the way back, you will visit a handicraft workshop and then enjoy typical meals in the village.
D2: Multi pitch routes climbing in Peñas.
During this second day you will climb all day long on the superb cliff of Placa del Aguila, which is 120 meters high. This is a perfect introduction to multi pitch routes climbing because the anchors places are comfortable, the atmosphere is sunny and the descent is easy by abseiling.
